York University squeezed to a win against University of Toronto’s Mississauga campus with one ball to spare in the first CIMA University Cricket Championship final at Sunnybrook Park, Toronto, last month.
The U of T Mississauga campus scored 76 for 5 wickets from 15 overs. York replied with 77 for 3 wickets from 14.5 overs and a win by seven wickets.
Opener Hassan Jamil lead York’s efforts with 34 runs, supported by Nehal Patel’s 23 not out.  Leading run scorers for the Mississauga campus in the final were Vaibhan Vaddy Makkar with 25 and Manmeet Singh 19.
York’s Umair Khalid picked up 2 wickets for 16 in the final.
Early morning dark clouds gave way to bright sun and heat. The north ground at Toronto’s Sunnybrook Park had done well to be playable following heavy rains that hit forced many cricket games in the area to be called off without a ball bowled.
U of T Mississauga campus (48/7 in 10 overs) began with a 12 run win against Ryerson University (37/7 in 10 overs). York then scored 55/5 from 10 overs to beat UOIT 45/9 by 10 runs.
U of T Mississauga qualified for the final by restricting UOIT to 37/8 (10 overs) and clipping 38/3 from 7.5 overs.
York struck 60/6 from 10 overs then held off the challenge of Ryerson whose innings closed on 57/9; York won by 3 runs. Hassan Jamil lead York’s batting efforts with 31, then followed with 34 in the Final.
Hassan Jamil (York) was named Best Batsman of the championship.
Isuru Gamarachchi (U of T Mississauga) won the Best Bowler award and Umair Kahlid (York) was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) before York captain Arul Raja was presented with the championship trophy.
